Introducing the 4th Edition of the Grimoire Quadrantis Telemetrum

BERLIN, 2020-10-19 - Fresh from the mind of WNDSN, the 4th edition of the Official Time & Space Manual advances the body of information regarding the WNDSN suite of telemetry tools. Now available, the 4th edition enables the user to hold a complete understanding of how to independently calculate crucial measurements that are often ignored, taken for granted, or assumed to be impossible outside of highly involved, highly technical contexts.

This 4th edition furthers the user’s ability to directly apply a range of fundamental scientific concepts such as calculating distance, height, time and date without the use of electronic, digital, or networked equipment. The goal of WNDSN instruments is to increase self-sufficiency and broaden the understanding of the concepts underlying how we navigate through space, time, through a variety of urban, challenging, or wild contexts. At the core the 4th edition is a love letter to trigonometry and all of the ways that its principles apply throughout our daily lives; ways that usually allude us as we maneuver through the demands of modern life.

Information regarding ancient navigational methods are ever relevant and this newest edition of the manual expands the modern user’s understanding of astronomical systems, providing concise and tangible instruction. The 4th edition reiterates the constituent concepts of calculating distance with clearer fundamental and clarifying graphics; all previous material is included and updated, including the Time & Space addendum that previously introduced setup, history, as well as the functions and tutorials regarding understanding the ancient fundamentals behind the measurement of time and date.

The 4th edition includes,

  • 140 pages more than the 3rd edition and 30 new topics
  • 129 graphics, increase of 57 from the 3rd edition
  • 22 tables, increase of 5 from the 3rd edition
  • 40 equations, increase of 16 from the 3rd edition
  • 77 entries in the bibliography, increase of 39 from the 3rd edition

An abridged version of the 4th edition is available as a free download with every Telemeter. At 212 pages, it is pared down to just setup instructions and tutorials. A German edition is also available.

Efficient learning and accessible information is the overarching goal for the 4th edition. The examples and tutorials utilize only the most salient formulas and only require the Quadrant for measurements and computations (plus pen and paper for note-taking). The expanded reference section is a standalone resource for emergency or austere situations. The novice, the seasoned practitioner, and the educator looking to demonstrate mathematical concepts in tangible ways are equally addressed.

WNDSN provides the most up-to-date and accessible documentation regarding the use of the WNDSN Telemeter, Horary, and Sine Quadrants. WNDSN works throughout the year to increase the completeness and accuracy of the educational materials, with the goal that everyone from professional to enthusiast can benefit from the WNDSN Telemeters and apply it to their interests and needs.

Continuing the use of the now iconic cover design is paying homage to medieval mathematical and astronomical books; the styling of the title as a "Grimoire" is a play on textbooks of magic with instructions on how to make spells, talismans, and the like, "Grimoire Quadrantis Telemetrum" -- Textbook of the magic of Quadrants and Telemeters. Finally; the author's name at the top; "Filiusventi" is a hint at the practice of Renaissance scientists to latinize their names; venti is wind, and filius the son.

The WNDSN Quadrant Telemeter is a low tech, naked-eye, observational instrument for measuring angles via various inputs and sighting methods. In addition, the Quadrant Telemeter is a graphical, analog computer providing functions to directly process or convert the acquired values. The Quadrant Telemeter allows the user to measure angular size and compute distance, height or depth of object, slope, altitude, or elevation; it provides an inclinometer as well as scales for the computation of sine, cosine, and tangent for a given angle.

Telemeters are WNDSN’s flagship products made in Germany. Available in brass for durability, acrylic for optical properties, and other materials for special applications, they feature exceptional design specifications and build quality, and are made to be passed on from generation to generation.
